Sthira Sukham Asanum

There are times when coming to the mat proves to be quite the challenge and sometimes the practice itself pushes our boundaries in both the physical and mental realm.

From Patanjali’s yoga sutras, this verse encourages us to approach the prac- tice with a sense of steadiness (sthira) and joy (sukham) in our poses (asanas).

We can apply this on a surface level as we build our physical strength but moreover we begin cultivating our internal strength. This is the strength that counts most when we take our practice off the mat. When you’re already late and there’s a traffic jam ahead. When a friend or family member has said or done something that has taken you off guard. When you feel like the project you started will never find its end.

Remember what you have built in your practice… the steady flow, one breath at a time and the ease and joy from the playful nature of the practice. Beyond the four walls of a studio lies our real practice.
