June Community Partner: The Coup

If anyone asks us for a great place to grab a bite to eat after class, we’ll always include The Coup on our list. For well over a decade they have been creating decadent, wholesome, and delicious vegetarian fare.

Offering a full menu from breakfast through dessert, this 17th avenue staple is one of our favorites not only for the food but also for their sustainability practices and their dedication to supporting local.

The Coup came to be 13 years ago thanks to a shared interest in vegetarian cuisine between the two original owners. Sourcing from local farmers, choosing GMO-free, and recycling are standard practice.

The food is really good. Like insert a lot of really’s good. Non-vegetarians will enjoy and appreciate the cuisine. Vegetarians will be in a state of enraptured bliss. OK, that might feel like a bit of a push, but I think after a yoga class and a walk/drive to this restaurant, a meal enjoyed, and you might just find such a state! One of our favorites on the menu is the beach-front hot pot. Spicy coconut tomato lime broth loaded with seasonal vegetables, lotus root, edamame, lemongrass and rice vermicelli noodles. A close second is the upstream burger, which is a roasted garlic, cashew, yam & seed patty topped with fresh dill, mixed greens & red onion, served on whole grain ciabatta, spread with garlic aioli. Yum.

They inspire new creations and new ideas all the time and are about to launch the latest initiative. Le Petit Coup is a restaurant-within-a-restaurant located at the bar within The Coup. It is a vibrant new segment of their restaurant that focuses on highlighting key flavours and notes of seasonal and local vegetables. Le Petit Coup embodies a tasting menu curated and crafted by their head chef, Adam Ryan, with vibrant and creative beverage pairings. You can find out more about Le Petit Coup by following them on instagram @petitcoupcalgary. They will post details about dates and times of their next upcoming tasting menus, which we happen to know is on June 27th. There is limited seating available for all these events, so make sure you check in to book yours. Maybe after a yoga class?

Some cool facts about what they do and how deeply they care about what goes into us and into the Earth. The Coup only uses metal straws in their beverages, and compostable ones for take-out. Take out cutlery is compostable, and containers are recyclable. They encourage guests who order take out to bring their own containers and receive a 5% discount off of their bill. The Coup uses energy efficient light bulbs in all areas of the restaurant, and a lot of their furniture is vintage or repurposed. The Coup plants 36 trees a month through Tree-Canada to off-set their waste. They participate in Meal Share ensuring that meals are provided for people in need. Add in composting, bee hives, and wind-power off-set and you can begin to see how connected and inter-connected to well being they are.

We are ever so grateful to be partnering with the Coup again this year.
