June Community Partner: The Coup

It’s no secret that we LOVE this month’s community partner. For over a decade they have been creating decadent, wholesome, and delicious vegetarian fare. This 17th avenue staple is one of our favorites for not only for the food but also for their sustainability practices and their dedication to supporting local.


We had the chance to connect and ask a few questions about the restaurant and what seasonal menu items they have for us this spring & summer.

How did The Coup come to be?

The Coup came to be 13 years ago thanks to a shared interest in vegetarian cuisine between the two original owners.

The Coup supports local, and offers organic where it can. Share some of your favourite local suppliers.

Some of our favourite local suppliers include Chinook Honey Farm, Brassica Mustard, Manns Organic Farms out of Lethbridge, and Leaf & Lyre.

Oh the food & the bevvies. What delicious seasonal menu items do you have for us this spring and summer?

We are thrilled about our recent menu launch! We have just updated our new food, beverage & dessert lists. We are very excited about our kale-gary caesar salad. It has camelina massaged kale, local greens, reserve cheddar, crispy capers, onion flowers, black pepper-buckwheat crunch & mushroom bacon in a creamy almond-nori dressing. There’s also a vegan option to switch to macadamia parmesan at no charge.
Our in house baker did a wonderful job with our desserts for this Spring and Summer. My personal favourite is our newest vegan icecream sandwich! It’s called the “roaming fields” with golden-mylk banana ice cream, sandwiched between camelina-oat cookies, finished with pink pepper-mango candied popcorn
Finally, the drinks! Our cocktail program is ever changing, and our creative bartenders are excited to bring a feature cocktail daily to all of our guests. A new favourite on our Spring Summer list is called the “pool shark”. It’s a blended drink made with vanilla tofulatti, Ironworks Bluenose Rum, a hazelnut falernum and a touch of citrus. The best part is that it’s served in a Shark Cup, so cool!

You are very aware of environmental impact and consciously make choices to soften the impact. Please share some with us.

The Coup only uses metal straws in our beverages, and compostable ones for take-out. All of our take out cutlery is compostable, and our containers recyclable. We encourage guests who order take out from us to bring their own containers to receive a 5% discount off of their bill. We use energy efficient light bulbs in all areas of the restaurant, and a lot of our furniture is vintage or repurposed.

The Coup knows what it means to take care of each other and to take care of this earth. Conscientiousness, and community is synchronous with this 17th avenue restaurant and part of what makes it such a fabulous establishment.
