Have you ever mistaken what was said for what was meant?

We spend a lot of time in our heads. Replaying conversations. Rehearsing replies. Imagining outcomes. A word is spoken, and the mind fills in the blanks. We assign meaning. But was it real or just familiar?

Imagination is a mental activity based in language without a corresponding reality.

We read between the lines.
We interpret a short message as dismissive.
We assume someone meant more than what was actually said.
The words are real. The meaning we assign might not be.

This sutra invites us to notice how quickly the mind turns words into stories. We imagine what someone else was thinking. We attach meaning to a phrase that was never intended. Language becomes a springboard for projection.

The days are getting darker. December is almost here, and even though the world says it’s the season for sparkle and cheer, your experience might be saying something very different.

Maybe it is merry for you.
Maybe it feels like a big bah-humbug.
Maybe it’s both in the same day.

Whatever it is, you’re not wrong for feeling it.

There’s space for the dark and the light. There’s room for the heaviness, the quiet, the softness, the little sparks that still show up, and the simple relief of letting yourself feel exactly how you feel.

You don’t have to force it.
You don’t have to fix it.
You don’t have to match anyone else’s pace.

Let the dark be dark. Let the light be light. Let this season meet you where you are.

Sometimes we see what we expect, not what is. The mind fills in the gaps, draws from memory, and makes meaning fast.
We don’t even notice when we’ve slipped into assumption.

Sometimes it’s the tiniest turn of the mind
That takes us away from what’s actually happening.

This sutra invites us to notice
Where story has taken the place of truth
And where we might be ready to see again.
