Tell us how Raw Eatery & Market came to be?
Raw Eatery and Market was created by Ali and Megan, two best friends who love animals, eating healthy food, and sustainability.
We lived in Toronto for several years and found the city to be very inspiring in terms of the plant based movement. Originally from out west, we thought we could impact change in “cow-town” and be closer to our roots while doing so. Three years ago we decided to take the leap and open our own vegan eatery and market in the Kensington neighborhood of Calgary.
With a background in nutrition and food sciences you know food well. How do you choose the menu items and create your dishes?
Nutrition is always a huge focus on our menu. We want to make sure each dish packs a punch with protein, micronutrients, healthy fats, and fiber. With nutrition in mind, we love to create fresh, veggie packed dishes that WE want to eat ourselves! We try to put a raw and vegan spin on classic dishes, such as tacos, “noodle” dishes (we use zoodles!), and even sushi.
Do you have any faves?
The kale salad has such a great dressing that has been in our recipe repertoire for years! It’s a personal favorite of ours. The tacos are a hands down favorite for customers; they include a lettuce leaf shell, sunflower seed taco “meat”, smokey hummus, and cashew sour cream.
Any seasonal delights for August?
There may be some seasonal August dishes popping up! One thing that’s always changing is our desserts. We try to create a new raw dessert each day. Popular desserts include any of our cheesecakes, peanut butter bars, and raw brownies!
Farm fresh and local. What are some your favorite local suppliers?
We love supporting local, we used to have a designated “sprout guy” and “basil guy”, both of whom lived in the neighborhood and later became friends of ours. YYC growers or Galimax wholesale are great for local produce as well.
Sustainability is a big part of taking care of our planet and ourselves. I know this is also an important pillar for you. Can you share some of your sustainable initiatives with us.
One of the single most effective things you can do to reduce your carbon footprint and practice sustainability is by going vegan!! We hope to be a resource and easy option for people; to make choosing vegan accessible and viable.
We also use bio-degradable to-go containers and use local produce as best we can.
You also offer nutrition services. Can you tell us a little more about this offering.
Yes! Megan went to school at the University of Alberta and completed her BSc in Nutrition and Food Science. She is currently enrolled in the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition to complete her Holistic Nutrition certification.
She offers plant-based meal plans which typically involve an in-depth initial consult, followed by some detailed email follow-up, and a week long meal plan. The meal plan includes recipes, a shopping list, and instructions on how to execute and manage the new lifestyle.
It’s a very tailored and sustainable approach in which the client is meant to carry on their new lifestyle and knowledge into their life thereafter!
Any events or workshops coming up to share with our community?
No specific events are set up yet but we are always up for hosting workshops, events, private dinners, etc. Check our Instagram or Facebook for updates on anything we have coming up and please send us a message on either of these platforms if you’d like to host your own event at Raw!
